OptiNews"Team Zoum crushes Valentines Day Regatta" February 5 2012 Zoum sailors took 1st and 3rd overall in a three way tie for 1st in the 208 boat Gold Fleet at the season’s final Team Trials Qualifier. Leading the way, Shawn Harvey put in an impressive performance with two bullets, followed by Ivan Shestopalov. These sailors placed 1st & 2nd in the Blue Fleet as well. Team sailors Sophia Sole was 1st female followed by Liza Toppa in 3rd. In all, that’s 4 of the top 6 gold positions! "Team Zoum win November 14 2011 Zoum again took disproportionate awards at the annual Naples Cup. Awards included overall winner, 1st & 3rd in Blue Fleet, 1st in Red Fleet, 1st & 2nd female, and 2nd in White Fleet. Congratulations! Conditions were mostly light and shifty from the NE. Many of the nation’s top sailors attended including World Team members and sailors from Team Zoum sailors stomping at the October 16. 2011 Shawn Harvey led Team Zoum to victory at the River Romp this past weekend! He put in an excellent performance with a 2nd in the Blue Fleet and 3rd overall. His throw-out was a 6. Rumor has it this regatta may have marked his 1st championship bullet! In all four Team Zoum sailors placed in the top 10 Blue Fleet spots. Not to be undone, Team Zoum sailors took 2 of the top 3 White Fleet spots. Severin Gramm took 2nd and Joshua Miller took 3rd. “BHYC takes back Maine State Championship ” August 10 2011 Congratulations to Ian MacDiarmid who brings back the State Championship to BHYC after winning 9 of 10 races in one of BHYC’s new Zoum Optis to place 1st overall and 1st in Blue Fleet. “Team Zoum sailors win three of the top 6 spots at the 2011 USODA National Championships” July 24 2011 Conner Harding narrowly missed being the US National Champion by just two points over 12 races. Martina Sly was top female and Richard Schuurmans rounds out the top sailors in the Gold Fleet. One of our newest team members, Severin Gramm finished 3rd in his fleet to qualify for Team Trials. He purchased his Racer just 7 weeks ago and has been clear that his #1 goal was to qualify for Team Trials. "3rd year in a row Team Zoum member place in top three at IODA North American Championships- This year the international event was hosted by Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club" July 7, 2011 Team Zoum sailors competed as part of Team USA in the 2011 IODA North American Championships this past week. Team member Russell Clarida is the new North American Champion! Other top Team members included Alie Toppa who was 1st American female and Richard Schuurmans who finished 7th overall. Additionally, Alie Toppa and Richard Schuurmans were part of the winning North American Team Racing Team. The third place team included Team members Russell Clarida and Martina Sly. In summary, 33% of the top North American Championship sailors, 20% of the top 10 finishers, and 40% of the 1st & 3rd place Team racing finishers were Team Zoum sailors! Congratulations Team Zoum and Team USA! "Team Zoum sailors again showed great skills at Team Trials in San Francisco" May 8, 2011 Team Zoum was a proud sponsor of the event. Team Zoum sailors won 2 out of 3 overall top spots at Team Trials hosted by San Francisco Yacht Club and secured 40% of the invitations to the World Team. Team Zoum sailors also placed 3 in the top 6 and 4 in the top 10 positions. Conditions at the 4 day event were very challenging. Choppy cold water and strong current played an important role. Good hydration and nutrition was essential. Top sailors had to overcome these challenges and personal ones, such as Z-flag penalties. Martina Sly of FL was 3rd overall and 1st female. She had a capsize in day 3 that cost her 30 places and forced her to climb back into contention on day 4. She is one of the few females to have earned a place on the World Team. Russell Clarida of CT was in contention for most of the regatta... he jumped in the cold waters to give aid to a lesser experienced sailor showing excellent sportsmanship character! Team Zoum took 1st in Red, 1st & 2nd, 5th & 6th in Blue, and 3rd in White Fleets. "Team Zoum dominates USA's gold fleet at Valentines's Day by winning 4 of 6 top spots at final qualifier" February 13, 2011 Great performance for Team Zoum at Valentine's Day Regatta in St. Petersberg FL. This was the final qualifier for 2011 Team Trials in San Francisco CA and was attended by approximately 225 sailors from around the country. Team Zoum sailors comprised 4 of the top 6 finishers including 1st in Red, 1st in Blue, and 1st Female. Extraordinary considering that there were only 5 Zoum sailors present. Congratulations! "Zoum sailors were four times as likely to earn medals in Red, White & Green Fleets at 2010 Orange Bowl Regatta"December 30, 2010 Team Zoum sailors had a successful 2010 Orange Bowl Regatta in "Team Zoum sailors win White Fleet and medal in Red & Blue Fleets at Junior Olympic event hosted by US Sailing Center - Martin County" December 12 2010 "25% of those selected for South American Championship sail a Zoum Racer" November 27 2010 Zoum had a phenomenal showing at Midwinter Championships hosted by Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans. 25% of those that qualified for coveted spots on the South American Team sail Zoum Racers. Special mention goes to Ivan Shestopalov who pulled it together and ignored the pressure brought by the big boys to claw back over 50 places in the last day with 3 bullets, a 5th and a 3rd in 5 races to finish 8th overall at just 10 years old. Most recently, the NCSC hosted nearly Team Zoum sailors were 1st & 2nd Overall as well as 1st in Blue Fleet, 1st in White Fleet, 1st & 2nd Female, and 1st in Green Fleet. Congratulations! “A peak at the next generation of Zoum sailors…” October 19 2010 The annual season opener for Two of our youngest team sailors showed their stuff. Ben Althouse won the Green Fleet convincingly in light shifty conditions. “It was fun and I’m really happy I did well.” Garrett Dixon came in 3rd, also a young man of few words said, “I am 53.1 lbs. I don’t know why I was so fast but I was.” Both Ben & Garret earned coveted bullets. We expect to see both of these boys finish-out the year with high marks before moving up to the Champion Fleets. Other top marks belong to Alie Toppa 1st female, 2nd Blue fleet, and 2nd overall; Ivan Shestopalov, 1st White Fleet. Medals were also earned by several other Zoum sailors. “Team Zoum sailor Prescott Coleman wins White Fleet at the SE Championships at September 27, 2010 “Awesome performance by Team Zoum at 2010 August 5 2010 Alie Toppa and twin sister Liza Toppa of Lauderdale Yacht Club are 1st & 2nd of 104 girls that competed at the 3rd largest regatta of the year - 2010 New England Championships hosted by Sail Newport. The Toppa twins also placed 6th & 7th overall in blue fleet that consisted of 152 sailors. 10 year old Ivan Shestopalov of Coral Reef Yacht Club took 1st place in the White Fleet. 50% of the Zoum sailors stood on the podium to earn medals and 75% were in the top 5% of their fleets. “Team Zoum sailors all qualify for the 2011 US Team Trials at 2010 National Championships in Deltaville VA” July 24 2010 Over 300 of the nations best youth sailors converged in Deltaville VA for the 2010 Opti National Championships this past week. Team Zoum had an outstanding 2010 US National Championship- a repeat of last year's celebration! Standout performances include: 13yo Richard Schuurmans 1st in age group, 2nd overall, & 2nd in the Gold Fleet. A huge performance from one of our newest team sailors, 10yo Ivan Shestopalov, 1st in age group, 1st in White Fleet, and an amazing 7th place overall in the Gold Fleet. 12 yo Alie Toppa 1st female and 1st overall in Silver Fleet. 11 yo Shawn Harvey who won the Green Fleet at 2009 US Nationals places 9th in Silver Fleet. Andrew Schoene is 5th and tiny 8yo Garrett Dixon 9th in the Pearl Fleet. All Team Zoum Green Fleet sailors elected to sail in the Championship Fleet in order to qualify for US Team Trials in 2011. The three major charter companies operating at Nationals were unable to establish their brand domination at the podiums. Team Zoum demonstrated a competitive edge earning a disproportionate 25% of the top spots with its small Fleet. “Team Zoum sailor Alie Toppa wins the Blue Fleet at the 2010 Girls National Championships” July 20 2010 Alie Toppa wins the Blue Fleet of the Girls National Championship, 1st in age group, and places 6th overall, while twin sister and Team Zoum member Liza Toppa places 6th in the Blue Fleet. Congratulations to both. Martina Sly is to be congratulated for taking the 4th place finish in the Red Fleet. The course was a 1.5 mile trapezoid. Anna Tnnicliffe, Olympic Gold Medalist and twice Rolex Rolex Yachtswoman of the year, also from Lauderdale Yacht Club shared words of wisdom and excitement with the girls. “Team Zoum sailors Liza & Alie Toppa sailing for Lauderdale YC win the 2010 Team Racing National Championships” July 19 2010 24 teams competed over three days & 108 races in Deltaville VA to determine the US National Team Champions. 40% of the 1st place victors in Gold Fleet were Team Zoum members despite the fact that three major charter companies dominated the Fleet with their brands. We also congratulate Team Zoum racer Russell Clarida that participated in the Lisot Team that won 1st place in the Silver Fleet. “Richard Schuurmans wins USODA qualifier 2010 Texas Youth Race Week” July 16 2010 Richard takes Olympic Gold podium finishing 1st overall in the 6 day event hosted by Houston Yacht Club, Texas Corinthian Yacht Club, & Lakewood Yacht Club. "Awsome performance by Team Zoum at 2010 IODA North American Championships in Kingston Ontario" July 4, 2010 Team Zoum sailors competed as part of Team USA in the 2010 IODA North American Championships this past week. Conner Harding finished 3rd overall with a 2-1-1 last day performance. Alie Toppa was 2nd female overall and 1st North American female at the event. She also earned a 2nd place trophy for the Team racing event. All team Zoum sailors finished in the top third. 75% finished in the top 10%. Congratulations to all of you! "Team Zoum Optimists were Zouming at 2010 USODA Team Trials" May 5, 2010 Preliminary results suggest that [90%] of the Zoum sailors will qualify for a National Team, [60%] for coveted spots on the North American Team and World Team. Conner Harding finished 6th just three points shy of a World Team spot after a DSQ in a race he had previously placed 1st. April 18th, 2010 Team Zoum members ranging in age from 10-14 competed at the 2010 LYC Spring Ocean Series Dinghy Championships hosted by Lauderdale Yacht Club of Ft Lauderdale FL this weekend. The competition was stiff with strong sailors from across Florida sailing offshore in tough ocean conditions that combined rain, heavy seas, strong currents and medium winds of 10-13 kts. Team Zoum members placed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th overall with Conner Harding and Martina Sly taking 2nd & 3rd in the Red fleet, Alie Toppa taking 1st in the Blue fleet, Prescott Coleman and Shawn Harvey taking 1st & 3rd in the White fleet. Garret Dixon reached deep into his heart and applied all of his 50lbs to take 1st in the Green Fleet. Go Team Zoum!
April 6, 2010 Team Zoum members ranging in age from 10-14 competed at the 41st SE Dinghy Championships hosted by Key Biscayne Yacht Club of Key Biscayne FL this weekend. Competitors arrived from across Florida to compete in 10kt easterly winds in one of the great sailing grounds- beautiful Biscayne Bay, FL. Team Zoum members Conner Harding, Alie Toppa, Shawn Harvey, Prescott Coleman, Grayson Dixon, & newest member, Ben Althouse earned medals in all Red, Blue, White & Green Fleets respectively including 1st place in Red & 2nd, 3rd and 4th places in White Fleets.
March 14, 2010 Team Zoum members ranging in age from 10-15 competed against sailors from along the eastern seaboard at the annual Spring Opti-fest Regatta hosted by US Sailing Center/ Martin County (USSMC) at Indian Riverside Park. Competitors arrived from across Florida, and from as far away as Connecticut. Team Zoum members performed admirably in challenging heavy wind conditions of 29kts with higher gusts during the two day regatta. Team Zoum was represented by three sailors all of whom earned the right to stand at the podium. Martina Sly was 2nd place in the Red Fleet, 2nd place overall, and 1st place female sailor. Shawn Harvey was 2nd place in the White Fleet. Newest Team Zoum member Jose Dapena earned a 1st place in the Green Fleet.
January 1, 2009 A huge optimist fleet had 12 races over four days in beautiful sailing conditions. Team Zoum had a great performance. Martina Sly was first girl in the Red Fleet. Ivan Shestopolav took 2nd place in the White Fleet. Sam Baker took 3rd in the Green Fleet despite missing several races due to illness. Other Zoum sailors that took home medals included Richard Schuurmans, Prescott Coleman, Shawn Harvey, & Jose Dapena. March 17, 2009 Lauderdale Yacht Club’s combined Spring Series Ocean Regatta went-off without a hitch in beautiful blue waters of Ft Lauderdale this weekend March 8 2009. Some of the countries best youth sailors converged in steady 15kt winds and 5’ rollers to gauge their competition ahead of Team Trials to be held next month in CT. In all, 5 races were timely completed with Team Zoum USODA World Team racer Axel Sly coming in 1st overall and 1st in the Red Fleet, Conner Harding 3rd in the Blue Fleet, and Allie Toppa, daughter of world renowned sailor Mike Toppa 1st in White Fleet followed by Ian MacDiarmid and Liza Toppa respectively. ZoumUSA founder Mat Coleman said "it was beautiful to see increasingly large quantities of Zoum boats participating in regattas and performing at the front of the fleet." Sailed on Biscayne Bay on October 25 and 26 with challenging conditions that included shifty light breezes as well as thunderstorms and torrential rain, The Fall Harvest Regatta marks the beginning of the Southeast Florida Optimist Circuit, and was the first time a Zoum Optimist has competed in the United States.
